After going through medical treatment of whatever kind, the last thing you should have to worry about is your medical bill. These bills can be quite confusing and unclear, especially if you aren’t used to the terminology and structure that they use. This is where finding the best medical bill negotiation service can be really helpful.

While a medical bill negotiation service gives you the chance to save money on your medical expenses, the best ones go further, acting as your advocate throughout the process. Choosing the right medical bill negotiation platform can take a lot of the stress out of dealing with medical debt.

How Medical Bill Negotiation Works

Medical Bill Negotiation

Just as it sounds, a medical bill negotiation service will take a look at your personal medical bills and provide assistance based on your specific scenario. This can be done in a couple of different ways, but some of the best services will have real nurses, physicians, or healthcare professionals that will go through your bills to catch any errors or overcharges. Others rely on AI to give you faster, more instant help.

The idea is for these services to negotiate on your behalf with various people, including the hospital or office you had treatment at, insurance providers, etc. This will get you clarity not just about what your medical bill even says to begin with, but also if there are issues with it.

One of the most common problems are errors or duplicates. You might get charged for a different treatment than you actually received or there are duplicate charges for the same treatment. These are problems that can make your medical bill higher than it should be or you expected.

These negotiation services are able to alert the correct facilities about these problems and usually get them resolved at the same time. But the benefit of a medical bill negotiation platform doesn’t stop there. These services are also able to attempt to negotiate your bill down, even if there are no issues.

Clearity Health

Clearity Health

Clearity Health helps patients across the US review and negotiate medical bills on their behalf. Clearity is one of the strongest services at helping you to understand your bill as well. If you are confused about what every line of your bill means and how it added up to that exact amount, Clearity is a great way to get help with this because it was founded by actual physicians with years of experience in the medical industry. So, they bring a level of expertise that may not necessarily be found in some other services.

They’re also transparent, you always know what’s going on with your bill, potential savings, costs, etc. What Clearity does is use real-world, regional costs drawn from federal CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) billing data to help you. And even if Clearity does not have a cost estimate for your exact procedure, perhaps due to location or lack of data, the team can still review and negotiate the bill with the hospital once you receive it.

Their strategy is to give you an idea of what potential savings you could have and then present it to the appropriate departments to have the chance to reduce your medical bills. Clearity uses real medical professionals, which is going to be a better, more humanized approach in general than relying solely on AI.

Clearity is also one of the more affordable options, with nothing to pay upfront. Your only cost is 20% of whatever savings they can get for you. For example, if Clearity saves you $1,000, their fee would be $200. There’s also a cap of $1,000 on their charge, which is great news if you have a particularly high bill.

Resolve

Resolve

Resolve has a team of experts who review your medical bills and situation to provide personalized assistance. This could mean negotiating directly with the hospital or office that billed you, or with your health insurance provider.

This is one area that Resolve is a bit different from some of the other platforms. They really focus on challenging the insurance providers, specifically, that you have. If you don’t have insurance currently, Resolve isn’t necessarily the right option to go.

However, Resolve is great if you think your insurance provider didn’t help you out the way they were supposed to. For example, if they were supposed to cover 50% of your treatment but only covered 30%. Or if you think they overcharged you for your portion of the bill.

Resolve also generally only deals with larger bills of $5,000 or more, so their expertise is best suited to those bigger expenses. If you have a smaller bill, you’ll likely need to look elsewhere.

You’ll pay a refundable deposit upfront, $249 for bills between $5,000 and $14,999, or $499 for bills of $15,000 and up, which goes toward your final fee. From there, Resolve takes 25% of whatever savings they secure for smaller bills, dropping to just 10% for bills of $15,000 or more.

Goodbill

Goodbill

Goodbill focuses on you uploading your medical bill and getting error detection, followed by personalized help. Goodbill is able to look into non-profit hospital charity care and other financial assistance programs that can help with medical bills.

They will also either contact your hospital or your healthcare provider to see if there’s any way to negotiate your bill down. Goodbill is, in many ways, a jack-of-all-trades, offering many of the same options you’ll find with other top services. That said, there’s a heavy focus on financial aid, so if you’re not looking for help with financial assistance programs specifically, another service might be a better fit.

As for the costs of Goodbill, it has an interesting system. You pay nothing upfront, but just 20% of your total savings on the bill afterwards up to a cap of $1,000. This is essentially the same as Clearity Health but where they differ is that certain health plans or memberships can make it completely free. For example, if you have Sana Benefits or Netwell, Goodbill won’t cost you anything, making it well worth using if you qualify.

Medical Cost Advocate

Medical Cost Advocate

Medical Cost Advocate is one of the most flexible options you’ll find. It handles just about every scenario and type of medical bill, so long as it exceeds $300 in total. If you want to look into a bill from a medical provider, Medical Cost Advocate will assist with that. If you’d like to negotiate with your insurance, that’s possible, too.

Medical Cost Advocate can even step in when your insurance denies a claim, negotiating on your behalf, something not many other services offer. This alone makes it worth considering. It can be a great option if you’ve had trouble finding help elsewhere.

Part of the reason Medical Cost Advocate isn’t for everyone is the high cost. It has one of the highest percentages that it takes from your savings at 35%. For out-of-network bills specifically, you can instead pay a flat fee starting at $299 to get help with bills that can be difficult to find assistance for elsewhere.

CareRoute

CareRoute

CareRoute has a two-fold style to its approach, allowing for assistance both before and after your treatment. Unlike other services, CareRoute is there before you even go to the doctor or hospital. It can look at your specific situation and triage your symptoms to give you a medical recommendation and cost estimate for treatment.

After your treatment, CareRoute can also do what the other negotiation services do and look for errors and negotiate on your behalf. This one-stop-shop approach can be appealing if you don’t want to deal with too many platforms. At 25% of your total savings, it isn’t the most expensive, and it’s cheaper if you have the CareRoute Premium tier.

Granted Health

Granted Health

Granted is the option for those looking for the most affordable option possible (outside of charity-related situations). Like some of the other best services, there is no upfront cost you have to worry about. Instead, Granted has what it calls a “success fee” that only takes effect if you save money on your bill.

Granted has the smallest success fee at only 10% of the savings you get. If you’re looking at the most affordable option, Granted is going to be an attractive one. That said, there’s a bit of a trade-off for that lower cost. Granted starts with an AI review of your medical bill documents, which tends to be quick, but this  technology is still developing and far from perfect.

It’s also no substitute for a real medical professional. Granted does have human experts available to explain things in detail, but they’re not your first line of support.

Which Medical Bill Negotiation Service Should I Choose

Best Medical Bill Negotiation Service

You don’t have to navigate expensive medical bills on your own. Mistakes happen, and there’s a good chance your bill has an issue that could save you some money. Even if it doesn’t, you can still negotiate your bill down to something more manageable with the help of a medical bill negotiation service.

The right service really comes down to your specific situation:

  • Want a real doctor’s opinion without paying anything upfront? Clearity Health is a great choice, founded by physicians. Unlike some of the more specialized services on this list, Clearity doesn’t require your situation to fit a specific mold, like a denied claim or a large out-of-network bill, making it well-equipped to handle whatever comes up with your bill.
  • Dealing with a large bill, or running into pushback from your insurance provider? Resolve is built specifically for these larger, more complicated cases.
  • Need help navigating financial assistance or charity care programs? Goodbill has a strong focus on this and can guide you through those options.
  • Facing a denied insurance claim or an out-of-network bill? Medical Cost Advocate specializes in exactly these kinds of situations.
  • Want support before your treatment even begins, not just after? CareRoute covers both ends of the process, from cost estimates beforehand to negotiation afterward.
  • Mainly looking for the most affordable option available? Granted Health offers the lowest success fee of the group.

No matter which service you choose, taking the time to review your medical bills can pay off. Whether it’s catching an error, appealing a denied claim, or simply asking for a lower rate, there’s often more room to negotiate than people expect.
